Amsterdam
We spent a few days walking around Amsterdam, as much as we could between spots of rain. However, we did manage to do a boat ride in the canal, and even saw tulips in the flower market as well. They smelled a bit nicer than… other smells around the place!
Van Gogh museum
We nearly did not make it here. We thought we had booked our spot but realised we hadn’t the night before. Thankfully we jumped at the booking, as it quickly booked out for days afterwards.
The Van Gogh museum was so great! We learnt so much about him and his life as well. There were some very emotionally touching pieces that we personally connected with, and we got to see the original version of the print we have hanging in our living room.
The museum also had a great exhibit of Gustav Klimt’s works, so it was a great two-for-one. Klimt was inspired by Van Gogh, and also took a lot of inspiration from Ancient Greece and Rome so it was interesting to see beyond his most known pieces as well.
Haarlem
Unfortunately the rain caught up with us again. We were keen to see some of the windmills of the Netherlands none-the-less. Due to the rain (and Maria’s short legs) our dreams of hiring a bicycle to ride through the country was not feasible. Thankfully Haarlem was easily reached by train.
We spent the day in Haarlem just walking the soggy streets and found the one magnificent windmill. This was a nice little town to visit with some pretty canals and a square which I’m sure would normally be bustling if not for the weather.
We had a great time in Amsterdam and Haarlem. It was time for us to fly off to Berlin Germany.
