Greece

So far we have been pretty relaxed in Athens after so much activity in England. We are planning on visiting the island Syros, Crete, and going to Nafplio in the Peloponnese very soon.

Exploring Athens

Syros

A spur of the moment trip. We were not initially planning on going here, but we wanted a quick island trip to break up our time in Athens.

Crete – Rethymno, Heraklion and exploring

Crete has such natural beauty, and there is so much to explore. We were blown away with it, and definitely feel like we need to go back and discover more. It is a big island and we were grateful to have a car and our family to drive us around, experienced as they are with the Greek roads. Our favourite places were the archeological site of Knossos, the archeological museum in Heraklion and Rethymno. Rethymno had a maze of tiny streets to explore, and lots of hidden spaces such as lovely restaurants and bars with beautiful garden courtyard spaces.

Crete – Archaeological museum and Knossos

Knossos is just marvelous, and we just loved exploring the area, and seeing how the ancient Minoans lived. The site was so well thought out, and everywhere you looked there was another detail to observe.

Nafplio

We were not planning this trip from the start but thought it would be good to do a little mini trip to the Peloponese before our trip to Italy. We even made it out on a sail boat and had a swim in some lovely beaches off the boat. Nafplio is a historically significant city, as it was at one point the capital of the First Hellenic Republic. We climbed up 999 steps to get to the top of the Palamidi fortress, which the Greeks captured from the Ottomans in 1822 during the Greek war of independence.

The Acropolis & Acropolis Museum

We spent the day visiting the Acropolis to see the Parthenon and also visited the Acropolis Museum. It is always wonderful to visit, each time we do. This time we were also able to explore beneath the Acropolis Museum to see the ancient city that they uncovered when they were building the new musuem.

We now fly out of Greece and off to Florence Italy for the big middle part of the holiday.

Thessaloniki

We flew from Munich to Greece to visit one more city, Thesseloniki. We explored the city’s rich history and based our tours in northern Greece from here. We later realised that the 28th of October is a national holiday (Maria knew but it just slipped her mind when booking) so we unfortunately did not get to visit Pella.

Mount Olympus and Dion

We finally caught the train back to Athens to visit Maria’s family again before we head back to Australia.

Bonus album – Cats of Greece

Each one makes the whole trip even better. This album will keep getting more and more pictures added.

I am carrying around cat biscuits with me whenever possible, though many of these cats seem pretty well fed.

The unrestored parts of Knossos look to be pretty well displayed there, I thought the only bit the public could walk through was all the reproduction buildings. Awesome.

I think a lot has been buried and lost to time, etc. But there’s still a lot there and the bath house is awesome.
